What is Coaching?

“Coaching is the process of helping another person to perform at the peak of his or her abilities. It emphasizes generative change, concentrating on defining and achieving specific goals. The focus of coaching is on what a person is doing and needs to do in order to perform effectively.”

Robert Dilts

The Coaching-Modeling Loop

In the process of coaching, one of the key components is helping the client to access resources to achieve the desired outcome. In Coaching-Modeling Loop (developed by Robert Dilts), the coach will help the client to access the resource by modeling his past excellence and apply it to the current coaching context. This is essentially an example of “double loop learning”.

In addition, the coach could also model the resource from external exemplar and coach it onto the client. This is done only if the client does not have the resource within.

The “Coaching-Modeling Loop” process to coaching is a very powerful and comprehensive approach. You can move forward only if you have the resources to do so.

Coaching at the level of Identity

Most coaching focuses on behavioral change. Coaching at the level of identity creates a shift in perception and meaning. This is especially important when coaching high potential executives to raise their performance and readiness for the next jump. Coaching at this level enables the client to shift believes and values. When the client discovers the congruency of actions with identity, the willingness and motivations to perform at his best is enhanced. In other words, the client is prepared to play at his best.

Coaching with NLP

Many of the tools in NLP are superbly coded for introducing change to the client. When these tools are applied on coaching it provides the coach with powerful listening and questioning techniques which are essential to help the client to be clear about the goals and resources. The specific tool for this purpose is the linguistic pattern. It is called the Meta-Model which has its origin from Transformational Grammar. The linguistic patterns provide the coach a way to help the client to discover more choices in the way he or she perceives.

Another very powerful tool used by NLPCOACH is “re-presenting” internal representation by reorganizing their submodalities (visual, kinesthetic, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory). This tool helps the client to be clear about their goals and its consequences. It also enables the client to anchor the effects and sensations so that it can be re-accessed easily in the future to keep the motivation high.

In NLPCOACH, the hallmark of our coaching approach is to leverage on high performance state to access powerful resources that enable peak performance.  This is a New Code NLP approach to coaching. It is fast and effective. It takes into consideration that the unconscious mind is significantly more capable to perform at a higher level than the conscious mind.

This is amply demonstrated in high performance sports where the athlete typically goes through a personal ritual before launching into the game. This ritual gets the athlete into a high performance state which brings the conscious mind and unconscious mind together to work in unity to optimize the performance.

Other distinctive NLP patterns for coaching includes Anchoring, Milton Model, Strategies, Belief Change and etc.
